Wednesday, September 22, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 220.00 0.65% 34,018 S&P 500 26.25 0.61% 4,369 Nasdaq 57.50 0.38% 15,081 Stocks looking to bounce, with U.S. futures sharply higher after last night as reports indicated that troubled Chinese property developer Evergrande’s main unit Hengda Real Estate Group co says will make coupon payment for onshore bond due Sept. 23rd. That buys Evergrande some time, although debt restructuring is still likely. Also, the House passed a bill Tuesday that would temporarily fund the government and suspend the debt limit. The legislation could fail in the Senate, as Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans will vote against raising the debt ceiling. The government would shut down on Oct. 1 and the U.S. would be unable to pay its bills sometime in October if Congress does not pass legislation addressing both issues. Bond markets unphased by the news with the 10-year stuck around 1.33%. Meanwhile, the FOMC began its 2-day meeting yesterday and announces its policy decision and releases its economic projections today at 14 2:00 PM ET and Chairman Powell follows with the press conference at 2:30 ET. In corporate news, shares of transportation giant Fed-Ex (FDX) slides over 5% after cutting its profit outlook on higher costs and stalled growth in shipments, while Adobe ($ADBE) slips after 3Q update disappointed the high expectations of investors. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index reopened, falling -200 points to 29,639, the Shanghai Index rises 14 points to 3,629 and the Hang Seng Index gains 122 points to 24,221. Markets have been put on edge this week by trouble in the Chinese property market, especially the precarious situation of its largest builder of homes, Evergrande. The company is a massive issuer of debt both inside China and offshore to international investors. Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 are coming off all-time bests as consumer prices (CPI) data indicated U.S. inflation was in-line with estimates, raising hopes that growth may have peaked, while sectors tied to economic growth such as industrials, materials and metals advanced a second day on the heels of the passage of a large infrastructure bill. The July consumer price index increased 0.5% last month after climbing 0.9% in June, though on a YoY basis was above 5% again (ahead of today’s PPI data at 8:30 AM ET). Meanwhile, two Fed members (George and Kaplan) each said the central bank should announce its timeline to reduce its massive bondholding, with Kaplan calling for it to begin next month, with tapering to begin in October. Healthcare was also a drag on markets as S&P components MRNA and PFE fell after the drug regulator of the European Union said it was looking into new possible side-effects of mRNA COVID-19 shots. Asian shares dropped for the first time this week as China stepped up scrutiny of its insurance technology platforms while European stocks drift on mixed earnings results. The Nikkei Index slipped -55 points to 28,015, the Shanghai Index slid -7 points to 3,524, and the Hang Seng Index dropped -142 points (0.535) to settle at 26,517. Early this morning the Senate Democrats passed the $3.5 trillion budget framework, opening a path for President Joe Biden’s economic agenda. However, tech weakness dragged down the Nasdaq Composite led by large cap names on Tuesday, with more weakness early. Crude posted its biggest intraday gain in more than two weeks, while the U.S. dollar climbed to a three-week high and Treasury yields hit their highest levels since mid-July (1.34%). Meanwhile, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said supply disruptions are raising prices, but it’s unclear whether they will lead to continuous gains in inflation. Those headlines come ahead of today’s consumer price index (CPI) which is expected to show a 4.3% year-over-year core print, 5.3% year-over-year “core” overall. Treasury yields continue to edge higher ahead of today’s CPI reading, with the 10-year up about 3 bps to 1.37%, meanwhile the U.S. dollar overs around 3-week highs. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index jumped 182 points (0.65%) to settle at 28,070, the Shanghai Index was up slightly at 3,532 and the Hang Seng Index gained 54 points to 26,660. I forget that GTD rule. I got $AMWL the next morning because I won't bid up on any of our trades. What happens when we get the rec to trade an hour or less before market close? Are we to assume that every trade is GTD, or is noted on the email?
