Stock averages flirted with record highs on Tuesday, as the S&P neared but could not hold its early gains (ended Tuesday at 4,227, just off its closing high on May 7 of 4,232) while the Russell 2000 neared its all-time best close as investors appear wary ahead of inflation data due on Thursday in the form of consumer prices (CPI). Consumer discretionary and energy were the best performing major S&P 500 sectors on the day, while utilities were the weakest group. A lack of clear market catalysts kept institutional investors on the sidelines, while retail traders fueled the ongoing meme stocks rally with more volatility from the likes of AMC, GME, BBBY, WKHS, BB, with new names such as CLOV and WEN added to the fray. Fear remains non-existent in the market as the CBOE volatility index (VIX) touched its lowest level in over a year. It appears for the time being the “meme stocks” are taking over from crypto as the place to be as Bitcoin prices slid. /*============================================= = Tuesday June 8, 2021 = =============================================*/ U.S. futures slip after several Internet websites went down this morning including New York Times, Reddit, Amazon.com Web Services (though many of them are starting to come back now). Futures dropped when it first appeared it was a potential cybersecurity breach but CNBC reported that Fastly ($FSLY) was down and maybe the reason for some of the outages, though still unclear at this point to what the direct driver is of the website outages. Fastly did say it is “investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services,” on its service page. Prior to the Internet outages, U.S. futures weren’t doing very much, trading mixed to down slightly prior with Treasury yields lower (10-yr at 1.55%), along with a slide in oil prices and cryptocurrency (Bitcoin at 33K). U.S. equity futures were mixed, as inflation concerns continued to play on investors. Bitcoin fell, with some analysts suggesting the move may relate to the display of government control in the cryptocurrency space as the U.S recovered some of the Colonial Pipeline ransom. Stitch Fix and Marvell Technology gained following positive earnings results. Stocks finished mixed on Monday as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials finished with modest losses while the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 outperformed, paced by gains in the biotech sector as Biogen’s ($BIIB) FDA approval for its Alzheimer’s drug boosted optimism about futures FDA decisions on other drugs.
