Friday, August 27, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 84.00 0.24% 35,244 S&P 500 13.25 0.30% 4,479 Nasdaq 54.50 0.35% 15,328 U.S. futures are pointing to a rebound for U.S. stocks as markets prepare for a speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell that could provide with clues about the central bank’s timeline for pulling back on stimulus. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury dipped Friday to 1.345% as investors awaited Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, while U.S. stocks bounce after yesterday’s decline. Wall Street closed lower on Thursday, ending a streak of all-time closing highs on concerns over developments in Afghanistan, while fears of a potential shift in U.S. Federal Reserve policy prompted a broad but shallow sell-off. All three major U.S. stock indexes ended the session in the red, with the S&P and the Nasdaq notching their first down day in six. The sell-off firmed after hawkish commentary Dallas President Robert Kaplan who said he believes the economic recovery warrants tapering to commence in October, St. Louis’s James Bullard called for a start in the fall, while Kansas City’s Esther George said a move should be made sometime this year (none are policy voters in 2021). Meanwhile, the economy grew at a slightly faster pace than originally reported in the second quarter, fully recovering its losses from the most abrupt downturn in U.S. history, according to the Commerce Department. But jobless claims, though still on a downward trajectory, ticked higher last week. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index fell -101 points to 27,641, the Shanghai Index rose 20 points to 3,522, and the Hang Seng Index was down slightly at 25,407. In Europe, the German DAX is little changed at 15,790, while the FTSE 100 is also little changed at 7,125. Thursday, August 26, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 8.00 0.02% 35,368 S&P 500 -4.25 0.09% 4,489 Nasdaq -30.50 0.20% 15,334 Another day, and another record high for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite on Wednesday, but overnight futures paint a mixed picture amid a retreat in technology shares and caution ahead of a Federal Reserve gathering that may provide more clues about its approach to paring stimulus. With few negative catalysts to dampen the risk-on sentiment, all three major U.S. indexes crept modestly higher on Tuesday. The S&P 500 was able to notch its 51st record close of the year and the Nasdaq its 30th record closing highs for 2021. With the gains, the SPX and Nasdaq have now both risen 5-straight days (the Dow is on a 4-day win streak) – but volume on U.S. exchanges was just 8.29 billion shares, making it one of the slowest trading days of the year. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index rose 17 points to 27,742, the Shanghai Index fell -38 points to hold just above the 3,500 level and the Hang Seng Index fell -278 points to 25,415. In Europe, the German DAX is down over -100 points to 15,755, while the FTSE 100 fell about -30 points to 7,120. On the calendar today, U.S. Q2 GDP is expected to be revised up to a 6.7% clip versus the disappointing 6.5% pace from the Advance report and weekly jobless claims are expected to be 350K, but focus still remains on tomorrow’s Jackson Hole speech from Fed Chair Powell for clues on the timing of a tapering of monetary stimulus. U.S. Treasury yields rose overnight, with that on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note hitting 1.359% for the first time since Aug. 13. There were a handful of earnings results in the software space moving tech as well with ADSK, SNOW,CRM, SPLK, ESTC all out with results, while in retail, WSM rises on its results. there's a lot of use cases for semiconductors. i am bullish on semis in general but i like $MRVL specifically because of their hardware security module (HSM) product offering that is being consumed by Azure. and in general the HSM space is really niche.

/*============================================= = Tuesday June 8, 2021 = =============================================*/ U.S. futures slip after several Internet websites went down this morning including New York Times, Reddit, Amazon.com Web Services (though many of them are starting to come back now). Futures dropped when it first appeared it was a potential cybersecurity breach but CNBC reported that Fastly ($FSLY) was down and maybe the reason for some of the outages, though still unclear at this point to what the direct driver is of the website outages. Fastly did say it is “investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services,” on its service page. Prior to the Internet outages, U.S. futures weren’t doing very much, trading mixed to down slightly prior with Treasury yields lower (10-yr at 1.55%), along with a slide in oil prices and cryptocurrency (Bitcoin at 33K). U.S. equity futures were mixed, as inflation concerns continued to play on investors. Bitcoin fell, with some analysts suggesting the move may relate to the display of government control in the cryptocurrency space as the U.S recovered some of the Colonial Pipeline ransom. Stitch Fix and Marvell Technology gained following positive earnings results. Stocks finished mixed on Monday as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials finished with modest losses while the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 outperformed, paced by gains in the biotech sector as Biogen’s ($BIIB) FDA approval for its Alzheimer’s drug boosted optimism about futures FDA decisions on other drugs. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index fell -55 points to 28,963, the Shanghai Index fell -19 points to 3,580 and the Hang Seng Index slipped -5points to 28,781.
