Monday, October 18, 2021 U.S. equity futures are looking lower after posting strong gains last week, with oil prices extending their near-term rally into a ninth consecutive week, as concerns over surging inflation pressures and the weakest China growth rate in more than a year tamed optimism linked to a strong start to the third quarter earnings season. Chinese Q3 GDP missed, rising +0.2% q/q vs 0.5% consensus, and was +4.9% y/y vs 5.2% consensus amid a rolling power crisis, supply chain disruptions and a crackdown on the tech sector. In the U.S., the earnings flood begins this week with 72 names in the S&P 500 expected to report quarterly results this week. In corporate news today, Apple (AAPL) is holding its second major launch event of the Fall where it is expected to unveil the first redesign of its MacBook Pro laptop in at least five years (starts at 1:00 PM ET). In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index dipped -43 points to 29,025, the Shanghai Index slipped a few points to settle at 3,568, and the Hang Seng Index rose 78 points to 25,409. By Noah Browning LONDON (Reuters) -Oil prices rose over $2 on Wednesday after industry data showed a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories and on expectations demand will rise as vaccination roll-outs widen. Brent oil rose $2.25, or 3.1%, to $75.85 a barrel by 1355 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed $2.31, or 3.3%, to $72.77 a barrel. Brent hit its highest levels since late July and WTI since early August. U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillate stocks fell last week, two market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures, after Hurricane Ida shut numerous refineries and offshore drilling production. [API/S] Crude stocks fell by 5.4 million barrels for the week ending Sept. 10, compared to a forecast 3.5 million barrel drop. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's oil inventory report is due at 10:30 a.m. EDT (1430 GMT) on Wednesday. "The impact of Hurricane Ida was a lot greater than many anticipated and production in the Gulf of Mexico region might struggle to return until Tropical Storm Nicholas is done punishing the region with torrential rain," said Edward Moya, senior analyst at OANDA. Tropical Storm Nicholas moved slowly through the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power, although Texas refineries ran normally. Damage from the storm comes two weeks after Hurricane Ida knocked a significant amount of Gulf Coast refining capacity offline. "This year’s hurricane season has a much greater and longer-lasting impact on the global oil balance than in previous years," said Tamas Varga, oil analyst at London brokerage PVM Oil Associates. Oil prices also found support from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which said on Tuesday vaccine roll-outs would power a rebound, after a three-month slide in global oil demand due to the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant and renewed pandemic restrictions. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 0.61%, while Tokyo's Nikkei shed 0.49%, moving off a more than 31-year closing-high the day before. After the data, Chinese blue chips were down 0.73%, but pared earlier losses on hopes Beijing will roll out more stimulus. However, futures indicated a steadier open for European and U.S. equity markets, with the pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures up 0.08% and FTSE futures 0.11% higher. A burst of data out of China showed growth in its factory and retail sectors continued to falter in August with output and sales growth hitting one-year lows as fresh coronavirus outbreaks and supply disruptions threatened its economic recovery. Retail sales grew at the slowest pace since August 2020 and missed analysts' expectations, while industrial output also rose at a weaker pace from July, underscoring recent signs of slackening momentum in China and adding to expectations that Beijing will need to offer more support measures in coming months. "This is not a dip, it is a falling trend that will last at least until the end of this year," said Iris Pang, chief China economist at ING. Pang said she anticipated a 0.5 percentage point cut in Chinese banks' reserve requirement ratio (RRR) in October, and said more fiscal support was needed for small- and medium-sized companies. Shares in property developer Evergrande, which is scrambling to raise funds to pay its many lenders and suppliers, fell for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, losing as much as 5.1% to their lowest since January 2014. Lower inflation suggests the Fed will be under less pressure to begin trimming its vast asset purchases, and, as a result, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note US10YT=RR fell as low as 1.263%, its lowest since Aug. 24. Yields recovered slightly and were little changed in Asia on Wednesday at 1.284%, while the dollar was steady also having slipped against a basket of its peers on the inflation figures. Other currencies were also largely steady in Asian hours, with sterling particularly quiet ahead of British CPI figures. Oil prices gained on a larger than expected drawdown in crude oil stocks in the United States, with U.S. crude gaining 0.68% to $70.94 a barrel and Brent crude rising 0.61% to $74.05 per barrel. Profit target on $AA hit today for a nice gain before the sell off. Holding $YETI, $GM & $XLB into next week. May have to roll $GM but I will say more about that in the Monday morning note which will cover a lot inlcuding Aug numbers + upcoming trades. Have a great Weekend 👍
