Chinese Q3 GDP missed, rising +0.2% q/q vs 0.5% consensus, and was +4.9% y/y vs 5.2% consensus amid a rolling power crisis, supply chain disruptions and a crackdown on the tech sector. Shares of cryptocurrency and blockchain-related firms gained last week as bitcoin topped $60,000 for the first time since April, with expectations growing that U.S. regulators would allow a futures-based ETF. The Myth of Sisyphus. Influenced by philosophers such as SΓΈren Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Friedrich Nietzsche, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd. The absurd lies in the juxtaposition between the fundamental human need to attribute meaning to life and the "unreasonable silence" of the universe in response.[1] Does the realization of the absurd require suicide? Camus answers, "No. It requires revolt." He then outlines several approaches to the absurd life. In the final chapter, Camus compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes, "The struggle itself ... is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy".

That buys Evergrande some time, although debt restructuring is still likely. Also, the House passed a bill Tuesday that would temporarily fund the government and suspend the debt limit. The legislation could fail in the Senate, as Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans will vote against raising the debt ceiling. The government would shut down on Oct. 1 and the U.S. would be unable to pay its bills sometime in October if Congress does not pass legislation addressing both issues. Bond markets unphased by the news with the 10-year stuck around 1.33%. Meanwhile, the FOMC began its 2-day meeting yesterday and announces its policy decision and releases its economic projections today at 14 2:00 PM ET and Chairman Powell follows with the press conference at 2:30 ET. In corporate news, shares of transportation giant Fed-Ex (FDX) slides over 5% after cutting its profit outlook on higher costs and stalled growth in shipments, while Adobe ($ADBE) slips after 3Q update disappointed the high expectations of investors. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index reopened, falling -200 points to 29,639, the Shanghai Index rises 14 points to 3,629 and the Hang Seng Index gains 122 points to 24,221. In Europe, the German DAX is up 110 points to 15,450, while the FTSE 100 rises over 80 points to 7,070. Bitcoin prices recover, above $42,000 after briefly dropping below $40K last night. Markets have been put on edge this week by trouble in the Chinese property market, especially the precarious situation of its largest builder of homes, Evergrande. The company is a massive issuer of debt both inside China and offshore to international investors. By Noah Browning LONDON (Reuters) -Oil prices rose over $2 on Wednesday after industry data showed a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories and on expectations demand will rise as vaccination roll-outs widen. Brent oil rose $2.25, or 3.1%, to $75.85 a barrel by 1355 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed $2.31, or 3.3%, to $72.77 a barrel. Brent hit its highest levels since late July and WTI since early August. U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillate stocks fell last week, two market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures, after Hurricane Ida shut numerous refineries and offshore drilling production. [API/S] Crude stocks fell by 5.4 million barrels for the week ending Sept. 10, compared to a forecast 3.5 million barrel drop. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's oil inventory report is due at 10:30 a.m. EDT (1430 GMT) on Wednesday. "The impact of Hurricane Ida was a lot greater than many anticipated and production in the Gulf of Mexico region might struggle to return until Tropical Storm Nicholas is done punishing the region with torrential rain," said Edward Moya, senior analyst at OANDA. Tropical Storm Nicholas moved slowly through the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power, although Texas refineries ran normally. Damage from the storm comes two weeks after Hurricane Ida knocked a significant amount of Gulf Coast refining capacity offline. "This year’s hurricane season has a much greater and longer-lasting impact on the global oil balance than in previous years," said Tamas Varga, oil analyst at London brokerage PVM Oil Associates. Oil prices also found support from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which said on Tuesday vaccine roll-outs would power a rebound, after a three-month slide in global oil demand due to the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant and renewed pandemic restrictions. But oil price gains were capped by a fall in China's crude throughput in August with daily refinery runs hitting the lowest since May 2020 and overall factory output faltering.

By Alun John HONG KONG (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Wednesday as weaker-than-expected Chinese economic data reinforced worries about slowing global growth, amid fraught nerves over pandemic-related business disruptions and central banks' plans to taper stimulus. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 0.61%, while Tokyo's Nikkei shed 0.49%, moving off a more than 31-year closing-high the day before. After the data, Chinese blue chips were down 0.73%, but pared earlier losses on hopes Beijing will roll out more stimulus. However, futures indicated a steadier open for European and U.S. equity markets, with the pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures up 0.08% and FTSE futures 0.11% higher. A burst of data out of China showed growth in its factory and retail sectors continued to falter in August with output and sales growth hitting one-year lows as fresh coronavirus outbreaks and supply disruptions threatened its economic recovery. Retail sales grew at the slowest pace since August 2020 and missed analysts' expectations, while industrial output also rose at a weaker pace from July, underscoring recent signs of slackening momentum in China and adding to expectations that Beijing will need to offer more support measures in coming months. "This is not a dip, it is a falling trend that will last at least until the end of this year," said Iris Pang, chief China economist at ING. Pang said she anticipated a 0.5 percentage point cut in Chinese banks' reserve requirement ratio (RRR) in October, and said more fiscal support was needed for small- and medium-sized companies. Shares in property developer Evergrande, which is scrambling to raise funds to pay its many lenders and suppliers, fell for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, losing as much as 5.1% to their lowest since January 2014. Rating agency Fitch said that numerous sectors could be exposed to heightened credit risk if China's No.2 property developer were to default, although the overall impact on the banking sector would be manageable. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index shed 1.4%, as casino stocks plunged after Macau began a public consultation which investors fear will lead to tighter regulations in the world's largest gambling hub. An index tracking gaming stocks fell 20%, while Wynn Macau (OTC:WYNMF) fell as much as 34% to a record low. Markets also remained focused on the Federal Reserve's timeline for tapering its massive emergency stimulus. β€œThere is uncertainty in markets at the moment as investors wait to see what the Federal Reserve will do about tapering their asset purchases, which depends on the state of the labour market and the inflation situation,” said Sean Debow Asia CEO of Eurizon Asset Management. Debow said greater clarity would emerge on both in the coming weeks, though for now markets were quick to react to any data points on employment and inflation. Overnight the U.S. Labor Department reported the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August posted its smallest gain in six months, suggesting inflation has probably peaked, aligning with Fed Chair Jerome Powell's long-held belief that high inflation is transitory. Lower inflation suggests the Fed will be under less pressure to begin trimming its vast asset purchases, and, as a result, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note US10YT=RR fell as low as 1.263%, its lowest since Aug. 24. Yields recovered slightly and were little changed in Asia on Wednesday at 1.284%, while the dollar was steady also having slipped against a basket of its peers on the inflation figures. Other currencies were also largely steady in Asian hours, with sterling particularly quiet ahead of British CPI figures. A strong reading could potentially add pressure on the Bank of England to raise rates. Oil prices gained on a larger than expected drawdown in crude oil stocks in the United States, with U.S. crude gaining 0.68% to $70.94 a barrel and Brent crude rising 0.61% to $74.05 per barrel. [O/R] Spot gold was little changed, trading at $1802.0374 per ounce off having fallen from a one week peak of $1,808.50 on which it hit on prospects for lower interest rates. [GOL/]
