U.S. stock markets are rebounding after major indices fell a second straight day Thursday as consumer price inflation (CPI) data spiked to 30-year highs, renewing fears that the Fed is behind the curve and may need to raise rates quicker. There is no major U.S. economic data, and Bond markets are closed today in observance of the Veteran’s Day Holiday. Sterling hits lowest levels since Dec ’20 vs. the dollar and euro to lowest since July ’20 as the buck surges to more than 1-year highs. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index rose 171 points to settle at 29,277, the Shanghai Index gained 40 points (1.15%) to settle at 3,532 and the Hang Seng Index gained 1% to finish at 25,247. In Europe, the German DAX is higher by 20 points to 16,090, while the FTSE 100 is up 25 points to 7,365. Investors and traders have been trained to “buy the dip” on any market pullback over the last 2-years, and to this point have been rewarded with all major averages just off their record highs earlier this week. Year-to-date, the Dow is up 17.8%, the S&P 500 up 23.7%, the Nasdaq Composite up 21.2% and the Russell 2000 up 21% in what has been a broad, strong market rally behind better corporate earnings, government stimulus plans, and an easy money policy stance by the Fed. Earnings are finally coming to an end for the quarter, with Dow component Disney (DIS) sliding nearly 5% overnight on its top and bottom-line miss. Market Closing Prices Yesterday The S&P 500 Index slipped -38.54 points, or 0.82%, to 4,646.71 The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell -240.04 points, or 0.66%, to 36,079.94 The Nasdaq Composite dropped -263.84 points, or 1.66%, to 15,622.71 The Russell 2000 Index declined -37.71 points, or 1.55% to 2,389.58 Events Calendar for Today No major U.S. economic data due to Veteran’s Day Holiday Earnings Calendar: Earnings Before the Open: BHG, BKTI, CRC, CRLBF, CSU, EPC, OB, OGN, PGTI, SANW, SBH, SPH, STXS, TPR, TXMD, UTZ, WTT, XOS, YETI Earnings After the Close: ASTR, JAMF, KINS, KRUS, LAZR, LIDR, LTRX, MAPS, OPNT, RPID, SFT Other Key Events: Baird 51st Annual Global Industrial Conference, 11/9-11/12 (virtual) Credit Suisse 30th Annual Healthcare Conference, 11/8-11/11 (virtual) Jefferies 2nd Annual Global Interactive Entertainment Conference, 11/11-11/12 (virtual) JPMorgan Global Consumer, Retail & Luxury Conference, 11/8-11/11 (virtual) Morgan Stanley Global Chemicals, Agriculture & Packaging Conference, 11/10-11/12 (virtual) Piper East Coast Financial Services Conference, 11/10-11/11 (virtual) REITWorld 2021 Annual Conference, 11/9-11/12 (virtual) Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, 11/10-11/14, in Washington D.C. ==================================================== Sector News Breakdown Consumer Beyond Meat ($BYND) shares slide -15%; 3Q EPS ($0.87) vs est. Wednesday, August 11, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 32.00 0.09% 35,187 S&P 500 -2.25 0.06% 4,427 Nasdaq -32.00 0.21% 15,012 U.S. stocks are looking mixed ahead of key economic data today, coming a day after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 each rose to record highs, buoyed by gains in economically sensitive value stocks such as materials, industrials, and building products after the Senate passed a $1 trillion infrastructure plan today with 19 Republicans joining all 50 Democrats voting to approve the bill that includes $550B in new funding, and it will now move to the House. Early this morning the Senate Democrats passed the $3.5 trillion budget framework, opening a path for President Joe Biden’s economic agenda. However, tech weakness dragged down the Nasdaq Composite led by large cap names on Tuesday, with more weakness early. Crude posted its biggest intraday gain in more than two weeks, while the U.S. dollar climbed to a three-week high and Treasury yields hit their highest levels since mid-July (1.34%). Meanwhile, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said supply disruptions are raising prices, but it’s unclear whether they will lead to continuous gains in inflation. Those headlines come ahead of today’s consumer price index (CPI) which is expected to show a 4.3% year-over-year core print, 5.3% year-over-year “core” overall. Treasury yields continue to edge higher ahead of today’s CPI reading, with the 10-year up about 3 bps to 1.37%, meanwhile the U.S. dollar overs around 3-week highs. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index jumped 182 points (0.65%) to settle at 28,070, the Shanghai Index was up slightly at 3,532 and the Hang Seng Index gained 54 points to 26,660. In Europe, the German DAX is up slightly at 15,785, while the FTSE 100 rises around 35 points to 7,200. Tuesday, August 10, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow -19.00 0.05% 34,979 S&P 500 -0.25 0.02% 4,425 Nasdaq 17.50 0.12% 15,142 Stock markets are looking quiet again, as major averages have been holding near record highs but struggling for direction to start the week. Stronger economic data last Friday on the form of non-farm payrolls and declining unemployment helped boost sentiment about the economy, overshadowing any uncertainty over what impact the fast-spreading delta virus variant will have on the economy and comments from Federal Reserve officials about scaling back support. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index gained 68 points to settle at 27,888, the Shanghai Index jumped 35 points to 3,529, and the Hang Seng Index gained 322 points (1.23%) to close at 26,605. In Europe, the German DAX is up around 25 points to 15,770, while the FTSE 100 is down a few points at 7,125. Today a fairly busy day of economic data, but all eyes fixed on the inflation reports coming up tomorrow (CPI) and on Thursday (PP), to see if the four-month spike in prices is indeed transitory as the Fed has pledged or if it is something more troubling for consumers down the line. Earnings season has begun to slow, with nearly 450 S&P companies having reported this quarter, with only some big retailers (WMT, TGT, HD, LOW) remaining. Trading ranges have remained in tight ranges of late, as summer doldrums have kicked in early.
