Monday, September 13, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 233.00 0.68% 34,724 S&P 500 27.25 0.61% 4,476 Nasdaq 80.50 0.52% 15,514 Stock futures are looking sharply higher, with the S&P trying to snap its longest losing streak since February (5-days currently) ahead of key economic data this week (CPI and retail sales). Stocks are recovering despite a handful of negative headlines this weekend including a WSJ article that House Dems are considering a 26.5% corporate tax rate from 21.5% with a 3% surtax on individual incomes over $3m, & increasing higher rate capital gains tax to 28.8% from 23.8%. Also this weekend, Sen. Joe Manchin said this weekend he would not vote for the $3.5 trillion budget bill, adding that there’s “no way” to meet the September 27 deadline. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index gained 65 points to 30,447, the Shanghai Index rose 12 points to 3,715 and the Hang Seng Index dropped -392 points (1.5%) to settle at 25,813. In Europe, the German DAX is surging over 175 points (1.1%) to 15,785, while the FTSE 100 is up over 50 points to 7,075. Stocks slipped all last week as the S&P fell 1.7%, the Dow lost 2.15%, the Nasdaq shed 1.61% as the S&P 500 extended its losing streak to 5-days, the longest since the middle of February. The S&P 500 has rallied over 38% without a 5%+ pullback over the last 309 calendar days. With the European Central Bank offering only a partial tapering of its bond purchases last week, while boosting growth forecasts, investors are now looking at an autumn glide path for stocks based on a similar move by the Federal Reserve later this month. Markets will closely watch the CPI inflation reading after another rise in producer prices (PPI) late last week. Market Closing Prices Yesterday The S&P 500 Index dropped -34.70 points, or 0.77%, to 4,458.58 The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell -271.66 points, or 0.78%, to 34,607.72 The Nasdaq Composite dropped -132.76 points, or 0.87%, to 15,115.49 The Russell 2000 Index declined -21.58 points, or 0.96% to 2,227.55 Events Calendar for Today 2:00 PM ET Federal Budget for August Earnings Calendar: Earnings Before the Open: NSSC, SEAC Earnings After the Close: AVO, CSBR, EPM, ICMB, MTRX, ORCL, RFIL, VOLT Other Key Events: Barclay’s Financial Services Conference (virtual) 2021, 9/13-9/15 BMO Capital 2021 Real Estate Conference (virtual), 9/13-9/14 Citigroup 2021 Global Technology Conference (virtual), 9/13-9/15 Cowen 2nd Annual Health, Wellness & Beauty Summit (virtual), 9/13-9/14 Credit Suisse 34th Annual Basic Materials Conference (virtual), 9/13-9/14 Deutsche Bank 11th Annual Aircraft, Finance & Leasing Conference, 9/13-9/14, in NY JPMorgan Gaming, Lodging, Restaurant & Leisure Management Forum, 9/13-9/14 Piper Global Technology Conference (virtual), 9/13-9/14 Piper 2021 D.C. The tax increases would be part of the House Ways and Means Committee’s plans to pay for the party’s priorities in a fast-moving budget bill. Those items include an expanded child tax credit, a national paid-leave program and renewable-energy tax breaks. Joe Manchin said this weekend he would not vote for the $3.5 trillion budget bill, adding that there’s “no way” to meet the September 27 deadline set by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Wednesday, August 18, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow -64.00 0.18% 35,195 S&P 500 -2.25 0.06% 4,441 Nasdaq 18.50 0.12% 15,015 U.S. futures are looking mixed ahead of the Fed Minutes, with the Dow and S&P slipping, while the tech heavy Nasdaq Corp looks to rebound after underperformance on Tuesday, as major averages fell by the most in four-weeks. Fed Minutes from the prior FOMC meeting (after 2:00 PM today) may show discussions about tapering monthly bond purchases, or just how divided FOMC officials are on the debate. Yesterday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the pandemic is “still casting a shadow on economic activity.” Overnight, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari said Tuesday that incoming economic data will drive the central bank’s decision on when to taper its asset purchases, noting that it’s “reasonable” to foresee such a move taking place late this year or early next year. Yesterday, the Nasdaq fell -0.9%, Dow -0.8% and S&P 500 -0.7% ended down on a day that started with pressure from Chinese equities and saw mega caps slide and home improvement names sell off after Home Depot Q2 comp sales mix. Today, rival Lowe’s (LOW) reports a beat across the board while retail giant Target (TGT) beats on the top and bottom line with slightly better comps, though shares slip. The S&P closed above Monday’s intraday low of 4,437 and today’s intraday low successfully tested a support level of 4,423, the prior high. The move comes one day after the S&P 500 had posted a 100% rise off its March 2020 closing low. It has now been 328 calendar days since the benchmark index last ended a decline of more than 5% from a record high. The current 328 calendar-day run since then end of a decline of more than 5% from a record high, is the longest such streak since early 2018. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index rebounded, rising 161 points to 27,585, the Shanghai Index gained 38 points to 3,485, and the Hang Seng Index climbed 121 points to 25,867. In Europe, the German DAX is down -15 points to 15,900, while the FTSE 100 slides over -20 points to 7,155. Thursday, August 5, 2021 Futures Up/Down % Last Dow 55.00 0.16% 34,745 S&P 500 9.25 0.22% 4,404 Nasdaq 33.50 0.22% 15,107 U.S. futures are looking up modestly, rising roughly about 0.2% across the board into one of the heaviest days of corporate earnings of the season, as major averages continue to hold not far off record highs. The S&P 500 index has held the pivotal 4,400 level for over a week now, as overall major averages have moved sideways for two or three weeks now, bolstered by rising on better economic data, earnings results, and an accommodative Fed, which has offset rising Delta variant concerns and fears of further global restrictions to contain the rise in cases and tighter government restrictions in China. Oil prices edge higher after sliding sharply the last 3-days on demand concerns. Bitcoin prices are down about 4% holding just above the $38,000 level while Ethereum slips nearly 4% to 2,600 in the crypto sector. Ahead of tomorrow’s nonfarm payrolls report, investors will get two more labor market data points with the Challenger jobs report at 7:30 and the weekly jobless claims. Euro Stoxx 50 rises 0.5% around best levels for the week. Wednesday’s after-hours big-name earnings were disappointing for the most part, which could weigh on sentiment. Major averages ended the session mixed on Wednesday, following conflicting signals on the economy that showed a hot services sector, but a labor market that continues to struggle to find workers. The Institute for Supply Management survey on Wednesday jumped to a record high of 64.1 in July, but the ADP Employment Report showed private payrolls only rose by 330,000 last month, well shy of the 695,000 estimate ahead of tomorrow’s payrolls. The Dow Jones saw the biggest fall, dragged lower by a decline of more than 6% in Amgen in the wake of its quarterly results, accounting for about 103 points to the downside while energy was the weakest sector on the day, suffering its biggest daily percentage drop since July 19.
